There are some great ways to treat children and teens with schizophrenia!
There is a myriad of strategies and techniques used to treat children and adolescents with schizophrenia. In fact, treatment may consist of medications, individual therapy, behavioral intervention or some combination of the three.
Medications Have Come A Long Way
Recently, medications have come a long way towards improving the mental conditions of many children and teens suffering from schizophrenia. In fact, medication is still viewed as the treatment of choice for many psychologists who see children and adolescents with schizophrenia every day in their office. Newer atypical antipsychotics are being prescribed which increase cognitive organization in teens and children alike. In combination with other medications, this medicinal combination can really do wonders for children and teens suffering from schizophrenia.
Psychotherapy Can Really Help
Although medication does seem to be the preferred method of treatment for children and teens suffering from schizophrenia, the addition of psychotherapy can also work to benefit. In fact, while family therapy may not be the right option for children and teens suffering from schizophrenia, an individual-based approach can actually work well. The reality exists that even the most well-intentioned parents
may not be able to help a child suffering from schizophrenia. Having a professional therapist
work with a child to diminish some of the more overt symptoms associated with schizophrenia can actually be a wonderful way to help a child or teen struggling with schizophrenia.
Token Economy Therapy
One unique therapy approach, token economy, has been shown to help children and teens struggling with schizophrenia, Token economy therapy works to correct behaviors associated with schizophrenia. Using positive and negative reinforcement based on behaviors is the foundation of token economy behavioral therapy. In essence, the child enters into a contract with the facilitator of the token economy. In this system, the child is rewarded for certain behaviors
described in the contract and punished for specific behaviors also described in detail in the contract.
