What is Grief?

The Grieving Process
Everyone grieves differently and how you grieve may depend on your personality, coping style, life experience, faith, and nature of the loss. The saying “time heals all wounds” may be accurate for some while others need a different kind of healing. There are five stages of grief:
While it was first thought that this process only lasts for a few short months, it is now thought that this process can occur over and over for up to seven years. But contrary to popular belief, you do not have to go through each stage of this process in order to heal. There is no typical response to loss because there is no typical loss. Each grieving person is an individual experiencing their loss in their own way, but the most important part of this process is to know that you are not alone.

One of the most important factors in dealing with a loss is to have a good support system. Even if you aren’t comfortable talking about your feelings openly, it is important for you to express some emotions in your own way. Finding a good support system is key to healing. Whether you find support through your family, friends, in your faith, a support group, or a grief counselor, it is important to find someone to use as an outlet. Grief counseling may sound like the last thing you want to do; this type of counseling can help you deal with the feelings that can often be overwhelming.
