Coping with Grief and Loss: How Grief Counseling Can Help

Grief counseling

Grief is a complicated process and can be helped with grief counseling and support.

Losing someone or something you love is one of the most painful experiencing in the world. It can bring on a myriad of different emotions and at times these emotions may feel like they will never lessen. These emotions are a normal reaction to a significant loss. But while you are drowning in a misty of emotional pain and anguish, there are some healthy ways you can cope. Let’s take a moment to discuss the grieving process and how grief counseling can help you restore some order to your emotions.

What is Grief?

Grief is the natural response to a loss. This term is used to describe the emotional suffering you feel when someone or something you love is taken away from you. Grief is often associated with the death of a loved one but there are many different causes of grief including divorce, loss of a job, a miscarriage, death of a pet, loss of a cherished dream, loss of a friendship, selling your home, and a loved one’s serious illness. While these are all common causes of intense grief, any life event can cause grief no matter how small the event.

The Grieving Process

Everyone grieves differently and how you grieve may depend on your personality, coping style, life experience, faith, and nature of the loss. The saying “time heals all wounds” may be accurate for some while others need a different kind of healing. There are five stages of grief:
  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Bargaining
  • Depression
  • Acceptance
While it was first thought that this process only lasts for a few short months, it is now thought that this process can occur over and over for up to seven years. But contrary to popular belief, you do not have to go through each stage of this process in order to heal. There is no typical response to loss because there is no typical loss. Each grieving person is an individual experiencing their loss in their own way, but the most important part of this process is to know that you are not alone.

How Grief Counseling Can Help

One of the most important factors in dealing with a loss is to have a good support system. Even if you aren’t comfortable talking about your feelings openly, it is important for you to express some emotions in your own way. Finding a good support system is key to healing. Whether you find support through your family, friends, in your faith, a support group, or a grief counselor, it is important to find someone to use as an outlet. Grief counseling may sound like the last thing you want to do; this type of counseling can help you deal with the feelings that can often be overwhelming. But grief counselors are there to be impartial and to help you explain why you are feeling this way. With this specialty counseling, you will be able to overcome obstacles to your healing process. Grief counseling can help you heal from your loss. For more information on seeking grief counseling, call Family Service Foundation today.
