Bipolar disorder

Does anyone really know what bipolar is or how it can affect you or your family? Let's take a moment to discuss this disorder and some treatment options available to you.

We all have ups and downs but when you suffer from bipolar disorder, it can make these moods go to the extreme. The symptoms of bipolar disorder can harm every aspect of your life from your job to your relationships to your daily life. Although this disorder can be treated, many people miss the warning signs and don’t get the help they truly need. So what exactly is this disorder and how can it be helped? Read on to found out!

What is Bipolar?

The first thing we should talk about is what is bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder, sometimes known as manic depression, causes serious shifts in mood, energy levels, thinking, and behavior. These shifts go from one extreme to another. But it is more than just a sudden mood change. A bipolar mood cycle can last for days, weeks, or even months and unlike ordinary mood swings, these moods can interfere with the ability to function. There are four basic moods a person with bipolar experiences: severe mania, hypomania, normal/balanced mood, mild to moderate depression, and severe depression. Each mood has a unique set of symptoms and signs that you should be watchful of.

Type of Treatments for Bipolar Disorder

A comprehensive treatment for bipolar disorder aims to not only relieve the symptoms of the disorder but also to restore the ability to function, fix problems the illness can cause, and reduce the likelihood of recurrence. Many treatments involve a mixture of medication, psychotherapy, education, lifestyle adjustments, and support. Medications can include mood stabilizers to minimize the highs and lows of bipolar mood swings. Therapy is an essential part of dealing with bipolar disorder and the problems it can cause in your life. Working with a therapist can help you learn to deal with feelings, repair relationships, manage stress, and regulate your moods. Lifestyle adjustments can help you keep the symptoms of bipolar disorder to a minimum as you work on maintaining a sleep schedule, avoiding stimulants like drugs and alcohol, consistently exercising, and minimizing stress. The support of this program is an invaluable resource as it helps to build your motivation and overall outlook. Participating in support groups gives you shared experiences and helps you learn from others. The causes of bipolar aren’t completely understood but it can appear to be hereditary. These episodes usually appear as a teenager or young adulthood. With the right treatment and support from the Family Service Foundation, you can lead a rich and fulfilling life. Many patients have been helped with a combination of medication, group counseling, anger management, and one-on-one counseling. For more information on getting help, call us today!
