Teen Substance Abuse Counseling

Teen substance abuse

Teen substance abuse can take a lot of forms. Do you know what to look for?

Substance abuse is classified as the use and abuse of substances such as cigarettes, alcohol, and illegal drugs. This abuse may begin in childhood, during the teen years, or in adulthood but is extremely popular in pre-teens and teens age 12 and up. Teenagers are full of rebellion and a need to fit in with their peers. This peer pressure means they are more likely to use and abuse these substances. So what do you do when you think your teenage has a substance abuse problem? There are some symptoms of substance abuse every parent should be aware of.

Symptoms of Substance Abuse

With the popularity of “pharm parties” and “club drugs,” teens often feel pressured into trying these substances and begin to get hooked. If you are worried about your teen abusing alcohol, cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and illegal drugs, there are some signs you should be looking for:
  • Giving up previous activities like sports, homework, or hanging out with friends
  • Declining grades
  • Aggressiveness and irritability
  • Forgetfulness
  • Disappearing money or valuables
  • Feelings of depression or hopelessness
  • Not caring about others
  • Using deodorizers or incense in their room
  • Paraphernalia
  • Avoid friends or family
  • Using substances alone and on a regular basis
  • Frequent hangovers
  • Pressuring others to use substance
  • Drinking and driving
  • Taking risks
These are just some of the visible risks you may see in your teen. If you see these symptoms from your teen, it is time to seek out treatment.
