Tips for Dealing with Everyday Stress

Everyone has to deal with stress at some point in their lives.

Everyone has to deal with stress at some point in their lives. Whether it’s your job, school, family, health, or something else, you will need to know how to deal with it constructively in order to get through it without falling apart.

How Stress Effects Our Bodies

Stress can have several negative effects on your body, affecting just about every system.
  • Brain and nerves: headaches, feelings of despair, lack of energy, sadness, nervousness, anger, irritability, trouble concentrating, memory problems, difficulty sleeping, mental health disorders
  • Heart: accelerated heartbeat or palpitations, high blood pressure, increased risk for heart attack
  • Stomach: nausea, heartburn, weight gain, radical changes in appetite
  • Pancreas: increased risk of diabetes
  • Intestines: irregular bowels and many other digestive issues
  • Reproductive organs: decreased fertility, difficult monthly cycles for women
  • Others: acne and other skin issues, muscle aches and tension, increased risk for low bone density and weakened immune system

How to Manage

If you’re feeling stressed out, there are a few small things you can do that might help you feel a bit better.
  • Manage your expectations, of yourself, your situation, and of those around you.
  • Don’t try to be superwoman/ superman. Everyone has their limits, get to know yours.
  • Take everything one step at a time. For some, everyday stress can be unbearable. Simple tasks get blown totally out of proportion when you try to accomplish too much at once. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, make a list of the things you need to accomplish. Go through that list one item at a time and before you know it, it will all be done!
  • Do your exercise. 20 to 30 minutes of exercise can help your mind and your body!
  • Find a hobby. Finding something that you can enjoy can really help to reduce your stress levels. Gardening and painting are both great creative outlets for some of that tension.
  • Talk about it. Sometimes, all you need to do is vent. Talk to a friend about what’s going on with you, and let them talk about themselves too. It just might help you to put some of your stress into perspective.
