With the holidays ramping up, people everywhere are suffering from a lack of self-care. Self-care is vital for well-being and is especially important around the holiday season. Not only is this important to your mental health, but to your physical and emotional health as well. It can be challenging, especially around the holidays for people to take the time to practice self-care. People with mental illnesses like depression and anxiety may have a hard time practicing self-care and as a result may have a problem dealing with everyday stressors. But with the proper care, your holiday season may prove to be the best yet. Let’s take a look at some tips for practicing self-care around the holidays.

What Makes You Feel Your Best

Like most things with mental health, there is no blanket fix. Self-care is a completely individual activity and should be tailored to your taste and activity levels. The first thing you should do is identify what makes you happiest. When was the last time you smiled or laughed? Whether it is going out to dinner, listening to music, or curling up with a good book, self-care is important to your health. Find something that makes you feel good.

Carve Out Some Time

Even on your most busy weeks, it is important to practice self-care. Make sure you carve out some time to take care of yourself. Even if it is an hour spent taking a relaxing bubble bath with your favorite book, it is important to spend some time relaxing and concentrating on you. The holidays season is full of special events. If you see an event you’d like to go to, make sure you carve out the time to do that as well. If you don’t have huge chunks of time where you can do this, break up your self-care into little segments. Make the time and effort wherever and whenever you can.

Practice Saying “No”

Most clients say that if they do not take care of things, no one else will. But this can be a problem. Putting too much pressure on yourself to get everything done can lead to illness and even more depression than before. Practice saying “no” when asked to do things or delegate the task to someone else.

Check In Regularly

Just as you ask everyone else how they are, it is important for you to ask how you are doing. Check in with yourself regularly. Ask questions like: Are you working too much? Do you need to slow down? Are you feeling tapped out? What do you need? These questions can help you determine if you need to take a little extra self-care or if you are actually alright. The holidays are always a busy season and it is not unusual for people to put themselves on the “back burner” in order to accomplish everything.
