The Upside of Mental Illness

The Upside of Mental Illness

While it's true that you are different from many people, that is not a bad thing at all.

When you’re living with mental illness, it’s so easy to fall into the trap of feeling like you’re all alone on an alien planet. While it’s true that you are different than many people, that is not a bad thing at all. As someone living with mental illness, you actually have just as much to offer as everyone else. A lot of people tend to look at mental illness as a taboo subject, something that’s just better swept under the rug and never acknowledged. What many fail to realize is that there is a lot to be learned from those with mental illness.

A Different Perspective

For starters, people with mental illness offer a very different perspective on life. Often, mentally ill individuals have a far better appreciation for “the little things.” Because a good day can sometimes be hard to come by, something as simple as sitting in the sunlight can be the best part of the day. Being mentally ill is a very humbling experience. It makes you realize that even though some things may seem like a huge deal, it’s actually really not that important.

Many individuals with mental illness have more compassion and empathy than those without. While to many people, the world’s suffering may be a sad headline or a horrible video they scroll past on social media, mentally ill people tend to feel the sadness and suffering themselves. It’s difficult to realize the impact of human empathy unless you’ve felt it. It may sound horrible to be able to feel others’ pain in such a personal way, but it’s really not. The ability to feel someone else’s pain and help them to move past it is one of the best feelings in the world.

As someone who lives with mental illness, each day is a mountain you must climb. Sometimes it is several. It’s so easy to feel like you just can’t do it anymore, but you can! The simple fact that you’ve managed to get this far means you have incredible strength. That strength gets you through each and every day, and your incredible strength is what will carry you through whatever life throws at you.
